Chichen Itza the mystery unravelled. Imagine a long, long time ago a small group of Mayans wandering around the Yucatan jungle. They stumble upon a small clearing and instantly they notice a ‘cenote’ (fresh water well) near by. The leader gathers in the men and announces, ” We will build a great city here, we will build temples to worship the God’s, observatories to study the stars and sports fields to test our best athletes.”
“Now I want you guys to start clearing the land, and you over there hiding in the back…go find the greatest rock deposits for our building material.”
“Say…what?” “Clear the land with with what?” “We don’t got no tools boss.”
“Hey chief…chief…over here. Find what kind of ‘rocks’, like pebbles?” “Cause you know I’m not carrying anything more than that in this heat.”
I can imagine the conversation going back and forth…but the Mayans did build one of the great cities of the ancient world, 10’s of thousands of Mayans lived and worked there and they built all this without metal tools, the wheel or even the beast of burden.
Chichen Itza is a must see when in the Yucatan.
